Faculty Trainee Interaction (1:4 approach)

The unique of the course being involvement of faculty & post graduates from 3 departments (excluding the director’s of the programme)

  • Department of Oral Surgery – 9 students & 2 faculty
  • Department of Periodontics – 18 students & 2 faculty
  • Department of Prosthodontics – 18 students & 2 faculty

This method of encouraging multidisciplinary approach aids in making the trainees understand the concepts in holistic manner.

Academic Activities: Seminars & Journal Clubs

Students enrolled into the programme will be given the topics 6 months prior to presentation. 
The topics are divided based on the areas of interest

  • Oral Surgery Related Topics: Anatomical Considerations in implant placement, Maxillary Sinus Anatomy pertaining to Sinus lift procedures etc.
  • Prosthodontics Reated Topics: Screw Vs Cement retained prosthesis, Open Tray Vs Closed tray Impression techniques
  • Periodontics Related Topics: Lasers in Implantology, Soft tissue augmentations

Faculty Interaction

The faculty involved in guiding the students also lecture various topics like Osseointegration, Full mouth rehabilitations, All on 4 Concept, Zygoma implant etc.

The uniqueness of the programme conducted is the diverse training of the postgraduates to various implant systems.

This method of understanding the basics in performing the implant placements has great advantages like 

  • Understanding the difference in drilling protocols & diameters between the systems
  • Prevents habituation to a particular system
  • Knowing the essential features of available systems & tailoring the plan according to each patient

Standardized Assessment       

The important aspect of surgical phase during implant placement is to assess primary stability. The trainees are encouraged to use advanced aids like Ostell (RFA analysis) to assess primary stability along with tactile methods (Torque Wrench).

Course Objectives

  • To have a comprehensive understanding of the biomechanics of implants and biology of implant-based oral rehabilitation
  • To enable case-selection, clinical & radiographic assessment of patients for dental implant rehabilitation
  • To achieve a satisfactory degree of skill and confidence in standard implant placement
  • To get practical tips on how to avoid common pitfalls and complications in implantology

Course Duration

  • 3 years of M.D.S Curriculum: 10 dental implant placements on patients of at least 2 systems
  • At the end of course completion, Nobel Biocare India (Pvt.) Ltd will be awarded to the student

Step by Step Learning Approach
Phase 1: Pre-Surgical Phase

  1. Introduction to the dental implantology department
  2. Faculty Lectures on basics in implantology
    • Anatomy of bone & biology
    • Osseointegration
    • Basic driling sequences in various systems
    • Case History & Radiograph planning (Demo)
  3. Hands on training (under faculty guidance)
    • Suturing on cloth
    • Drilling sequence on styroform models wit dummy implant pacement
    • Digital treatment planning
  4. Trainee Seminars & Journal Clubs (Faculty Mentoring)

Phase 2: Surgical Phase (Under Faculty Guidance)

  1. Case History (Surgical & Prosthetic) with Radiographic Planning
  2. Preperation of surgical template
  3. Impant placement on patient (single implant intially)
    • local anesthesia administration
    • flap reflection
    • drilling and implant placement
    • suturing & post operative care
  4. Follow up radiographic assesment of implant status.
  5. Second Stage Surgery (Healing Abutment Placement)

Phase 3: Prosthetic Phase

  1. Selection of impression technique (open/closed)
  2. Selection of abutment (stock/custom)
  3. Selection of type of prosthesis (Cement retained or Screw retained)
  4. Metal trail of coping
  5. Delivery of final prosthesis
  6. Post delivery instructions

Phase 4: Post-Prosthetic Maintenance Phase

  1. Periodontal pocket evaluation on periodic recalls
  2. Radiographic evaluation of mean bone level around implants
  3. Peri-implant mucositis or Peri-implantitis management
