CURRICULUM DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION
Knowledge of oral anatomy and oral pathology is fundamental to all aspects of dental practice. As a foundation course in the preclinical dental curriculum, dental anatomy and oral pathology introduces students to the anatomical and morphological characteristics of human permanent and primary dentition and the pathologic diseases in oro facial region.
In addition, the course begins to develop the students’ psychomotor skills for restoring teeth to proper form and function.
Students acquire knowledge to identify teeth, recognize and diagnose tooth anomalies, and treat or manage dental pathology.
Objectives of course design :
- To provide students with essential cognitive skills related to tooth morphology and oral pathology.
- To promote psychomotor skills to competently recreate proper tooth form in restorative clinical procedures.
- To be able to diagnose and possibly treat orofacial diseases.
The intent of our curriculum design was to enhance the curriculum by incorporating clinically applicable cognitive and psychomotor skills related to human tooth morphology.
Specific Objectives were to :
- Use class time to engage students in small-group discussions through instructor- provided digital learning resources
- Horizontally integrate the study of human tooth morphology with the remaining clinically oriented pre-patient restorative dental curriculum, and
- Facilitate student transition from pre-patient care to clinical practice.
Each session consists of didactic and laboratory components
- A course manual developed by dept
- Image resources ( 3-D tooth Atlas of Wheelers) containing two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimentional (3-D) images.
- PowerPoint slide presentations containing detailed instructions for laboratory assignments and topics taught.
While one group (approximately twenty five students) participates in small-group discussions, the other group begin the days laboratory activity. In the small groups, students can ask questions and the instructor facilitates the discussion encouraging participation by all students.
