The curriculum has been designed so as to equip the student with a definite periodontal skill set. This skill set will enable the student in delivering quality periodontal care.
The student shall acquire the skill to perform dental scaling, diagnostic tests of periodontal diseases; to use the instruments for periodontal therapy and maintenance of the same.
The student shall develop attitude to impart the preventive measures namely, the prevention of periodontal diseases and prevention of the progress of the disease.
The student shall also develop an attitude to perform the treatment with full aseptic precautions; shall also develop an attitude to prevent iatrogenic disease; to conserve the tooth to the maximum possible time by maintaining periodontal health and to refer the patients who require specialist’s care.
The teaching is divided into Theoretical Learning and Clinical teaching over a period of 2 years (3rd and 4th BDS)
1. Theoretical Learning: In the form of lectures
- 1 Lecture per week for III BDS
- 2 Lectures per week for IV BDS
BDS students classes are revised and at least 30 % didactic classes are repeated. Students are encouraged to take photographs of patients and append to their clinical case sheets. They are also encouraged to observe live surgeries done either by the faculty or PG students and the concept of seeing-is -believing is strongly put to use.
Pre-clinical work on models: Dental council of India does not incorporate any pre-clinical exercises for undergraduates in the department of Periodontics. Grasping the principles of instrumentation before treating patients is essential for building confidence in a new learner. As firm believers of this notion, the department has introduced pre-clinical exercises for undergraduates in the form of pencil exercises and cast exercises.
2. Clinical teaching
|1.||Recording of indices||05|
|2.||Case history recordings||05|
The clinical work is done under the supervision and is approved only after the completion.
IV BDS :
|1.||Recording of indices||10|
|2.||Case history recordings||10|
The clinical work is done under the supervision and is approved only after the completionMicroteaching programme:
Apart from regular discussions and demonstrations, the students posted in the department on a monthly basis are also guided by a microteaching approach. In this programme, focused mentoring is done by assigning 2-3 students to one faculty. The concerned faculty arranges short lesson plans of demonstrations for small group of students and then supervises them until adequate clinical skills are achieved. The faculty identifies strengths and weaknesses of every individual student and works on them by continuous monitoring. At the end of the posting, student evaluation forms are scored to identify students requiring further reinforcement.
CLINICAL PROGRAM DURING INTERNSHIP
During internship the student doctors are trained in the clinic for
- The management of periodontal diseases comprehensively.
- To use ultrasonic scalers to carry out scaling procedures.
- In the management of minor surgical procedures.
- Assisting in various surgical procedures carried out in the department.
