Tempormandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects jaw to skull. TMJ along with muscles of face and attaching ligaments enables movement of lower jaw to open or close mouth or move from side to side.

What are the causes of TMJ disorders?

  • Excessive grinding of teeth
  • Stress
  • Trauma to jaw bones

What are the symptoms of TMJ disorders?

Most common causes include:
  • Painful mouth opening
  • Pain on sides of face and neck
  • Limited movement of lower jaw
  • Clicking or popping sound of TMJ
  • Locking of the jaw in open position
  • Wearing away of teeth
  • Change in the way upper and lower teeth touch each other
  • Some other findings like headaches, dizziness, hearing issues.

What are the treatment options for TMJ disorders?

Intensity of problem will guide the treatment required as many options are available. Initially, home remedies like warm & cold packs, soft diet, avoidance of excessive mouth opening, good posture, relaxation to reduce stress are recommended. Along with these medications like painkillers, muscle relaxants and night guards can be given.
In severe cases or when not responsive to above treatments, surgery is done. These include arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, open joint surgery.
